I think I have finally gotten my spice cabinet under control. I can now smile when I open the cabinet (simple pleasures). Again, I have gradually done this and I am always improving it. Once you've developed a system, it is easy to maintain and oh so worth it.
I know I am an extreme type A but..... Here are my tips:
1. Save every reusable jar that comes into your house.
Obviously, canning jars are my favorite thing for spice storage, but they cost money. Some other jars I use are applesauce or pickle jars. Do you see the little brown jars in the picture? Those are my empty Garden of Life (GOL) vitamin jars. I absolutely love GOL's vitamins (I'll save that for another post) but a big bonus is that they come in glass jars. I like to buy spices in bulk to save money, but the big containers they come in are way to big for my cabinet. So I either refill my little jar; or for the spices I use most frequently, I fill a canning jar or GOL jar. The remainder in the bulk container I store in the basement.
2. Buy spices in bulk.
I would only recommend buying the spices you use frequently in bulk as they start to loose potency after about a year. I have found though that a lot of the time it is cheaper to buy a bulk size than the little jar in the grocery store. But then it goes against my nature to waste the extra even to save money. However, if you can pass the extra on to someone else, you've solved that problem and still saved money. I purchase my spices from Costco, Azure Standard, or Country Life. The latter two are co-op's that I can give you more information on how to purchase from if you are interested - just send me an email.
3. Label everything.
I know some spices are obvious, but trust me, you will forget what some of them are. Or when you are not home and some of the less experienced cooks in your home are making something, they won't have to call you every five minutes. I use my Dymo Letratag label maker that I received as a gift. You can buy one at Walmart or Amazon (click here). I do recommend using the plastic labeling tape as it peels off easier and you can wash the jar without ruining it. Of course, a cheap alternative for labeling is masking tape.
4. Alphabetize and use organizers/risers.
There is nothing more frustrating then not being able to find the spice you are looking for, especially when you are in a hurry. You will not regret taking the time to alphabetize. Better yet, let one of your children do it (good learning experience or refresher). I absolutely love the risers. Before I had them, even with the spices alphabetized it was extremely frustrating to dig around trying to find something. Can you tell one of my pet peeves is wasting time searching for things? You can find the organizers at Walmart, The Container Store, etc.
I know for some people organizing the spice cabinet would be a form of torture. I find organizing to be one of the cheapest, easiest methods of preserving my sanity. So just call me, I'll be happy to help. :)

Kari's Household Tips and Tricks
I was working in the kitchen this morning straightening up and it occurred to me that I shouldn't assume everyone already knows all the kitchen tricks that make life easier, that save you money and generally make cooking more fun. I certainly don't; but, I have picked up a lot along the way. I have spent a lot of time pregnant and nursing which has given me lots of reading time. So I thought I would share a few of my tips to maybe save some of you from reinventing the wheel thus you'll have more time to discover other things and maybe enjoy cooking more. So as not to stress out over it immediately, I recommend gradually implementing changes one at a time over a long period of time.
One money saving tip that I wish I had known sooner is that you can freeze bananas. There is no need to peel them, put them in a bag, or cut them up. You can just throw them in the freezer then pull one out when you are ready to make a smoothie or bake. When I have bananas that are going to go bad before I can use them, I just toss them in the door.
Yes they are ugly but they work great. As you can see I am getting low. I have a hard time getting rotten bananas around here. I think there are some monkeys that sneak in when I'm not looking. So to replenish my supply (conveniently Jewel had bananas on sale for $.39/pound this week), I grabbed about 5 pounds. Since the ones from the store are always green, I have a huge mound sitting on the counter to ripen before I freeze them. I think some have gone missing though.
I hope this tip helps save you time and money - buy a ton when they are one sale and you will always have ripe bananas on hand for baking and smoothies.

Strawberry-Banana "Ice Cream"
One of our favorite desserts is Strawberry-Banana "Ice Cream". It is sooooooo easy and yummy I thought I would share it. We prefer cultured coconut milk yogurt for this recipe but any yogurt will work. Kyle, who is not a coconut fan, even likes it. The sweetener is optional. I am sure other sweeteners, such as stevia, would also work. I have made this with frozen blueberries also. It does not come out as much like ice cream but is still very good. I'm sure other frozen fruit would work too.
16 oz plain yogurt
1 frozen banana (optional)
2 handfuls frozen strawberries
1-2 tbsp honey
Put all the ingredients into a food processor. Blend until smooth. Serve immediately. The leftovers can be spooned into popsicle molds and frozen.

We are off first thing tomorrow morning to celebrate my precious Grandma Fulk's (aka Jennie Mae) 95th birthday. She has no idea anyone is coming. Boy, will she be surprised. Anna's Book of the Century for Jennie Mae
Anna spent hours and hours researching events from the 1910's to date to make a Century Book for her Great-Grandma Jennie Mae. It was a great recap for her Grandma as well as a great history lesson for her. After many battles with our printer and a trek through the snow storm to Walmart for more ink, her project is done.
The Century Book
Great job, Anna!!!!
